SEO Basics - 8 Key Strategies For Online Business Success

The world of search engine optimization (SEO) can be a big scary place for newbies. Most SEO professional companies charge astronomical prices that may or may not guarantee success.

The search engines are forever changing the way they rank websites and what is important to achieve a higher ranking. Even with these everchanging factors, there are 8 important points that you must use with your website that are not likely to change any time soon.

1. Domain Name

It is better to register a domain with a keyword in it, unless you are trying to brand yourself (think Coca Cola or Ebay). For instance, if your name is John Smith and you sell golf items you would be better off by registering a name like www.golfproducts.com instead of www.johnsmith.com.

Unfortunately with millions of website domain names being purchased all the time, finding a related domain name not already taken can be a daunting task. Still it is worth it in the end because it will carry more significance with the search engines.

2. Title Tag

This is an often overlooked place to input keywords. Have you ever been to a website and the bar at the top of the page just said ‘untitled’ or ‘homepage’? That reflects how little the site designer knew about SEO. Always put a descriptive title on EVERY page of your website. Put something like ‘Find golf clubs, golf clothes and the latest pro golf tips’, instead of ‘John’s golf shop’.

Make sure not to go overboard and just list 10 or more keywords or long sentences in a row or the search engines will think you are trying to spam them. Think quality over quantity. The title tag should contain one keyword rich descriptive sentence.

3. Meta Tags

The importance of meta tags in today’s SEO world is still being debated. It is still advisable to include a meta tag keywords and meta tag description in your code. A lot of times the search engines will pull your description tag to show in your websites search result. If nothing is there it may not show anything at all or it may pull the first sentence off of your page which might be completely irrelevent to your intended audience.

Do not, I repeat do not list 100 or more keywords in the keyword tag. This technique used to work years ago, but the search engines recognize this technique and will consider it spam. Place no more than 10 keywords in the meta keywords tag.

4. Link Strategies

Another important tip is to include keywords when linking to other websites or pages within your own site. For example it is better to have a sentence like this ‘Find out the latest professional golf tips.’ then to say ‘click here for the latest professional golf tips.’ This also applies to any outbound links to other related websites. Include keywords on the part you want the visitors to click on.

Same goes for incoming links to your site. If someone wants to link to your site give them the code to paste in their website instead of leaving them to do it on their own. Have something like ‘Check out John’s Golf shop for the best golf clubs, golf info and golf tips.” This is much better than ‘Click here for John’s Golf Shop’. Search engines also like longer more descriptive links than just one or two words.

5. Relevant Content

Make sure that you provide only relevant information to what your actually offering or selling. If you have a bunch of unrelated info on a wide range of topics than the search engines will have a harder time pinpointing exactly what it is your site is about. So if your selling golf stuff stick to golf content, don’t throw in articles or links about scuba diving.

6. PageRank

This is still a relatively new term and applies to an algorithm that google’s search engine uses. Other search engines use similar strategies to google’s PageRank also.

Basically PageRank is used to define how popular your website is. The more relevant inbound links you have coming into your website the higher your PageRank will be. Google also has a toolbar that you can download for free that will show you a site’s PageRank. The best way to go about getting inbound links is to find related websites with a PageRank of 5 or higher. Then asking them to include a link to your site (giving them the proper code to paste in).

Another way you can receive a higher PageRank is to have a ton of content on many different pages and then linking all the pages together in a way that will raise your PageRank. With that said this type of strategy will not boost your PageRank tremendously, so if your site doesn’t contain thousands of pages don’t stress over it. It is important though to link strategically with keywords between the pages of your site.

7. <H1>
This is an HTML header tag used to define size of text within the tag. Search engines place more importance on text that is placed within the H1 tag. It’s like telling the search engines that ‘hey this text is important to my site’. The problem is that it can look unsightly. There are ways around this if you know about CSS styles, but for this basic intro article just know that in the end most people won’t be bothered by how the heading looks, and it will make the search engines like you more.

8. Creating Credibility

An often overlooked part of free publicity for your website is writing free articles like this one that relates to your intended audience. There are many websites on the internet where you can submit your articles for other people to place on their websites. I even employ this same strategy for my website. It’s really a win win situation. They win because they get quality relevant content for their site and you win because your name and website info is included at the bottom of the article, driving traffic to your site.

You increase your inbound links (PageRank) and provide free publicity for your website. It gets your name out there branding you an expert in your field of expertise and provides free web traffic to your site.

As search engines become more expansive and continue to offer more options for searching specific sets of information (products, businesses, entertainment, etc) this also means that there are more ways for you to get your website included in search engine results. Yahoo! lists nine ways to submit your websites and content to be included in their index.

The easiest way to submit to Yahoo! is through their free submission page. While this is extremely easy and quick, there is little evidence that this actually provides a quick inclusion into Yahoo’s index. In the event that your site is compatible with mobile browsers, there is also a special page to submit your mobile website to Yahoo!. Yahoo! also provides a resource to submit media content (audio, video, etc) although this requires a specially formatted RSS feed.

In addition to the free submission options, you can choose to essentially bribe Yahoo! into giving your website preferential treatment for a mere $50. This gets you a guaranteed inclusion within 48 hours and a more frequent revisit rate. For those that have a larger marketing budget and want more control over their site placement in results pages, they can opt for the sponsored inclusion. This is basically a parallel to Google’s Adwords program in that each allow you to control your position depending on your top bid for specific keywords.

Finally, there is also the Yahoo! Directory. At one time, being included in the Yahoo! Directory was thought to give websites tremendous boost in all search engine rankings. Lately there has been much speculation that this has been heavily devalued in other search engines like Google and MSN. The request for inclusion requires an annual $300 application fee that does not guarantee your acceptance. And if your website is denied, there is no refund. If that wasn’t enough to discourage website owners from submitting, Yahoo! also reserves the right to place you into whatever category they see fit and change your title tag and description too.

For most websites, the free submissions and good search engine optimization practices should be sufficient. But for those that have the budget and want the fast track there are some other options available although their effectiveness has been highly debated.

How Google Determines Your Site

When understanding how Google indexes webpage’s is to think of the web as a large book and which has an impressive index which identifies where everything is located. When you query a search on Google, it checks their index of webpage’s they have compiled and determines the most relevant search results to be returned back to the user.

The three key processes in delivering search results to you are:

* Crawling: Does Google know about your site? Can we find it?

* Indexing: Can Google index your site?

* Serving: Does the site have good and useful content that is relevant to the user’s search?

Crawling

Google use a process where automated software known as Googlebot skewers the internet for new and recently updated paged to be added to their index.

Google use a vast set of computers to fetch (or “crawl”) billions of webpage’s. The program which performs this amazing job is known as Googlebot. Other terms it’s also known as are robot, bot or spider. Googlebot uses an algorithmic process: computer programs determine which sites to crawls, how often, and how many pages they fetch from each site.

When Googlebot begins to the crawl the internet it starts with a list of URL’s from previous sessions, and augmented with Sitemap data provided by webmasters. When Googlebot lands on a page it takes the links from that page and adds them to its list of pages to crawl. New websites or updates to new ones are noted and updated on the Google index.

The good thing to note here is that you cannot pay Google to crawl a site more frequently and is not part of their revenue generating services.

Indexing

Googlebot processes each of the pages it crawls in order to compile a massive index of all the words it sees and their location on each page. In addition, Google processes information included in key content tags and attributes, such as Title tags and ALT attributes. Googlebot can process many, but not all, content types. For example, we cannot process the content of some rich media files, dynamic pages or iframes.

Serving results

When you query a search on Google, it takes your query and matches to relevant pages within their index and then displays the results in the order Google feels most benefits your query. Relevancy is determined by over 200 factors, one of which is Pagerank. Pagerank is based on the importance if the incoming links from other sites. Each link from another site your own contributes to how well your page will rank. But don’t think you can go out and get 1000’s of incoming links by automatically submitting to sites. Not links are equal in Googles eyes. Google is working hard to ensure that you the user are provided the best result for your search by identifying spam links and other practices that have a negative impact on search results. What this means in simple terms, if you have a site which provides information on pet care and products, then your page rank will increase when getting incoming links from websites with similar interests and content.

Before Google can index and rank your site well in search results, you need to ensure that Googlebot can crawl and index your site properly. Broken and dead links will have a negative impact on how your site ranks. It’s important to ensure that you use Google webmastertools to not only ensure your site can be crawled but to also ensure you comply with Googles guidelines and improve your sites ranking.
Caching your Site

One of the major advantaged I find with Google caching the content of your website is that if you ever mistakenly save over your index.html page on either your main website or one of it’s subfolders your can retrieve that data without to much hassle through Googles Webmaster Tools.

1. Log into your Webmaster Tools Account.

2. Click on Statistics on the left hand side panel.

3. Click on Index Stats.

4. Then on
cache: The current cache of your site cache:yourdomain.com

From here it will show you a screen shot of the last time Googlebot crawled your webpage.

What you want to do from here is save that page.

1. Go to ‘File’ at the top right hand corner of your browser.

2. Go down to ‘Save As’ and save it as index.html or index1 whatever you choose.

3. Use your FTP program to transfer it over to your Hosting Folder.

4. Using your Website Design Tool modify it from what Google has Cached then save back over your index.html file.

By this point you should your original Website which was lost should now be restored. At this point you may want to make a back up of it.

Dubai - Incentive Travel Planning

Dubai’s Dramatic Transformation: A Front Row Seat

In 2000, I arrived in Dubai the morning after Ramadan had started. There were giant photos welcoming their much beloved leader H. H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan back to the United Arab Emirates. (He was returning from having a kidney transplant in the USA.) Dubai was beautifully decorated with the same lights we use for Christmas trees in the west, however this was for Ramadan. This created a dreamlike quality and I remember thinking “A futuristic Arabian Nights fantasy.”

My first trip to Dubai was short. It was just a few glorious days of truly memorable experiences including my first desert safari and an enchanting Dhow dinner cruise on the Dubai Creek. I was mesmerized by the view as I floated past the Dubai Heritage Village while nibbling on chocolate delicacies. I was certain it was so certain that this was a dream that I kept pinching myself. After I returned to Canada, I never stopped talking about my incredible journey.

One incident that stands out in my mind happened after a riding lesson at the Dubai Polo Club. I relaxed and watched some polo. When I was ready to leave, I went to call taxi. A handsome polo player from Rajasthan offered me a lift back to the hotel. My father’s words “Never take a ride from a stranger echoed in my mind”. I politely declined with my usual “Oh I wouldn’t want to take you out of your way.” His response was “Out of my way? The whole place is about 5 miles wide.” I laughed accepted his offer and he safely took me to my destination in no time flat. At the time, I had no idea how dramatically Dubai was about to change.

On that trip, I met an elderly couple from the UK. The husband told me that when he had been in Dubai to help put in the infrastructure for electricity, the area around the clock was desert. At that time, the clock tower was a prominent landmark. When I went to Dubai in 2007 and 2008, I couldn’t even find the clock. It had been dwarfed by all of the new developments. In January, 2007, as I travelled downtown from the beach where I was staying, I counted 100 mega high rises under construction before I gave up and stopped counting. This was an area that, at the time of my first trip was just desert and beach. On that same trip, as the taxi took me out to Bab Al Shams to go riding, I noticed huge displays in the desert showcasing the shape of things to come. That part of the desert is slated for development and 40 upscale luxury resorts will soon be springing from the desert sands.

Dubai: An Incredible Incentive Travel Destination

They say that the Dubai skyline changes every 6 months. I had a chance to actually put this to the test in 2007 and 2008 by visiting every few months and it’s true. I like to think of Dubai as not one but 3 dramatically different incentive travel destinations, the Dubai of the past, present and future.

Dubai of the past includes Deira and the area around the Dubai Creek.

In Dubai of the present, an area of explosive growth, you’ll see glistening skyscrapers under construction and modern shopping centres. It can best be seen from the upper floors of any of the beach hotels.

Dubai of the future includes the Palm Island trilogy and The Map. It also takes in the part of the desert slated for development that I described earlier. You’ll pass this area on your way to the Bab Al Shams resort.

It has been a pleasure to watch the new Dubai take shape and each time I return, I look forward to seeing the dramatic transformation that has taken place.

Surefire Tips for Amazing Incentive Travel in Dubai

If you’re considering Dubai as the destination for your next incentive trip, I hope that you will find some of these suggestions based on what I have observed during the last 8 1/2 years to be of value. Keeping these guidelines in mind will ensure your comfort and help you spend an enjoyable and memorable time in Dubai. It will be a unique incentive trip that your group will talk about for years.

1. Plan well ahead for lowest airfares and best accommodation in Dubai.

The most important thing to remember is that it is important to plane WELL ahead, especially if your group is large. As hotel space becomes scarcer, prices do go up for accommodation and airline flights. Popular hotels like the One and Only Royal Mirage and Madinat Jumeriah’s Al Qasr sell out really fast. To avoid disappointment, some of the most popular attractions must also be reserved well ahead of time to ensure availability for groups.

2. Schedule your trip between October and April.

The best time to travel is between mid October and the end of April. At that time the temperatures are more comfortable and you can spend more time outdoors. Be flexible with your dates and don’t lock them in until you have given your incentive travel planner an opportunity to confirm availability of hotels and attractions. It would be a shame to lose out on an incredible location that could have been available if your dates had been more flexible.

3. Build in enough time for your group to experience the local culture.

Add an extra day to your group’s itinerary so that you can have a chance to explore the heritage section and get a sense of Dubai’s rich history and culture. Why go to Dubai and not see it? Why travel to a foreign destination and learn nothing about the people and their culture? If you just plan to sit in meeting rooms, lie on the beach, and get drunk, you may as well stay home and save yourself some money.

4. Double check visa requirements.

Visa requirements changed dramatically as of August 1, 2008 so make certain that you carefully verify what is required. Upon arrival, you will fill in an immigration and customs form. A portion of the card will be retained and you will be required to surrender it upon departure so don’t lose it.

5. Stay out of trouble.

Remember:


  • Illegal drugs are a definite no-no and penalties are STIFF. Remember that American TV commercial from a number of years ago? “When you’re busted for drug over there, you’re in for the hassle of your life.” My advice is don’t even think about it.
  • Even some prescription medication that is perfectly legal in North America and Europe is prohibited (e.g. codeine).
  • Some drugs that are over the counter in other countries are controlled substances in UAE. It is always best to check ahead of time and to carry your prescription and the original container.
    (Check with your nearest United Arab Emirates consulate for updates before departure)
  • Pornography is prohibited and possession carries stiff penalties.

6. Take precautions for the climate.

Dubai is ultra modern. It’s easy to forget that you are in what was up until recently a desert:

  • Wear a scarf or hat to protect your head from the sun and avoid sunstroke.
  • To avoid dehydration, ALWAYS carry a bottle of water with you and drink plenty of it.
  • Apply sunscreen liberally and often.
  • Be sure to pack cotton shirts, dresses, and blouses to ensure comfort.

7. Plan around the traffic.

Until the LRT is ready in September 2009, traffic congestion will continue to be a problem. Plan your itinerary and then book your accommodation so that you are close to the attractions you want to see on certain days. For example, if you want to explore the heritage area, stay in Deira for a night or two. Arrange a late check-in at your beach hotel and travel at night after at night after your Dhow cruise. This will be much more comfortable than sitting in gridlock for hours at time during the day.

8. Respect traditions.

The lifestyle in Dubai is opulent. I’ve never seen so many Ferraris and custom made Mercedes Benz’s in my life. You will find that the architecture and technology is even more advanced than what you’re used to back home. It’s easy to forget that you’re in a Muslim country with a vastly different culture from North America or Europe. Remember that the United Arab Emirates is rooted in tradition and a proud history.

Make sure that your group is aware of local customs and that you respect them. Here are some examples:

  • Show respect for your hosts and keep noise level to a minimum during prayer time.
  • When eating, be sure to remember to avoid using the left hand as this is reserved sanitary functions and it is considered to be unclean to use the left hand at the dining table.
  • Consumption of alcohol is permitted at some hotels, restaurants, night spots, and tourist attractions. Other than these venues, alcohol should never be consumed in public. You can actually be charged for being drunk in public.
  • Neighbouring Sharjah is a dry Emirate and penalties for possession or consumption of alcohol are STIFF. Don’t even think of taking it there.
  • Kissing, holding hands or making out in public are not considered to be appropriate in public.
  • Don’t even think of having sex in public. (Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors recently learned this the hard way after their arrest on Jumeirah Beach.)
  • Sex between unmarried couples is illegal and you are unlikely to be permitted to check into a hotel with someone who is not your spouse.
  • Women should not even think of topless sunbathing.
  • Nude sunbathing and changing of clothes in public is to be avoided by both sexes. (Authorities have recently cracked down on this and there have been numerous arrests.)

9. Dress modestly.

While Dubai is more tolerant than some other Muslim countries and you will see some tourists wearing bikinis on public beaches, out of respect for your hosts, it is best to opt for a modest swimsuit.

  • Long walking shorts are fine for the beach, resorts and desert safari but, other than that, they should be avoided.
  • Women should be sure to wear blouses and dresses with sleeves that come to just above the elbows or longer.
  • Sleeveless tops are frowned upon for men and women but especially for women.
  • Skirts and dresses should be to the knees or longer.
  • Showing cleavage is a definite no-no.

10. Include attractions that are unique to Dubai in your group’s itinerary

  • A MUST: A tour of the heritage section including Dubai Heritage Village, the Dubai Museum, the gold and spice souks, lunch at Al Dawaar Revolving Restaurant at the Hyatt Regency, and a Dhow Dinner Cruise
  • A desert safari (overnight for a special treat)
  • Jumana Desert Show
  • A day trip to Al Ain
  • A Day trip to Abu Dhabi

12. Don’t Pack Your Itinerary. Give your group some free time.

It is important to give your group some time to relax, unwind and see Dubai their way. Some members of your party may want to play golf. Others may prefer to go horse riding in the desert or skiing at Ski Dubai. Others may want to relax on the beach or book some treatments at the spa. Provide your group with a list of options and give them an opportunity to customize their experience.

Shopping is an important par of any trip to Dubai. People look forward to it.

Best Shopping: Souk at Madinat Jumeirah, Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Battuta (named after the great Arabian explorer), Gold Souk, Spice Souk.

13. Build at least one luxury excursion into your budget.

There will be no shortage of options but here are a few ideas:

  • Upgrade your Desert Safari to 5 star
  • Dinner in the Sky
  • Afternoon tea at the Burj Al Arab
  • A helicopter tour of Dubai
  • Hot air ballooning over the Desert

Jobs are an important factor when looking at a real estate investment. You want to buy in an area where jobs are common because no one wants to move to a place where they cannot find work. Looking at the U.S. Payroll Survey, the greatest job growth percentage during 2006 occurred in Phoenix, Arizona; Austin, Houston and Dallas, Texas; and Las Vegas, Nevada. Notice something? The Truth About Numerology and Why It Works

Numerology is a system of numbers for measuring the vibration of the letters of the alphabet, so that human personality, desire, thought, action and experience may be easily understood in accurate mathematical values.
